Why start with education?
At Built on the Rock Education, we believe that education is a powerful weapon against many of the challenges facing all societies. We seek to provide an education that meets the needs of the underprivileged populations in Kenya - education that can empower children to become participants in their own future. This impact will reach out to uplift the entire community. By meeting the educational needs of the local people, we, in turn, help create more self-sufficiency and economic growth for that community as a whole.
Why Kenya?
We have chosen to begin our projects in Kenya because the deep-seeded challenges that we have witnessed in this country. Many children in Kenya face obstacles that ultimately limit their access and ability to become educated. Challenges faced by children include an inability to finance their education (books, uniforms, tutoring, etc.), as well as, an expectation and/or responsibility to contribute to the financial needs of the greater family. The low wages and lack of economic stability in Kenya create a societal situation that often requires children to stay home and care for siblings and/or work outside the home in order to contribute to the families basic financial needs. Access to schools is also limited due to lack of funds for construction, materials, and salaries.
Many children in Kenya find themselves on the streets, living with the insecurity of not knowing where they will sleep or how they will eat. Street children have no rights and no access to education, healthcare or security. Many become victims of different types of violence, sexual violence, or economic exploitation.

What will we provide?
Our vision is to provide a live-in educational program that will be able to educate, house, and feed up to 120 girls each year. Our program will be focused on the Butere District of the Western Province of Kenya. The school will also provide work for other community members as we hire and support teachers, cooks, and other workers at good wages.
We feel that, in this way, our school has the potential to become the "rock" of a community - providing a foundation of hope which a strong and vibrant community can become empowered to thrive.
In the short term, our board has decided to sponsor children in the area that either are having trouble staying in their current school or who have dropped out of school and would like to return, but cannot due to financial difficulties. Look on this site for more information this.
